Balloons Used to Contraband Tobacco Products Closed Airport in Lithuania

A minimum of 11 of the meteorological balloons, containing 18,000 packages of black-market cigarettes, have been collected so far

Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for hours when numerous of them entered the national airspace.

Aviation Problems

The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.

Border Security Response

Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the aviation facility.

As many as 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the border with Belarus.

A minimum of 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.

International Illegal Trade

While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."

To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.

Cross-Border Effects

Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.

Illegal Transport Methods

In response to questions about why criminals use a method that is highly susceptible to weather factors rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."

Border Protection Aims

Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that this activity become unprofitable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."

Regional Security Context

Such border infiltrations occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across the continent.

Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have led European authorities to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
