Users Discontinuing Weight-Loss Medications Put On Pounds Four Times Faster Than Those on Conventional Diets
A recent study suggests that patients who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on lost weight far faster than those who end traditional diet and exercise programs.
Published data in a major health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Individuals buying such treatments should be aware of the danger of quick weight regain when the therapy ends," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery implies a reversion to original mass within about 18 months.
Weighing Therapies
The study, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
Scientists note that people who lose weight through dieting typically see a slower creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Understanding the Fast Rebound
Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the jabs accounts for the accelerated regain.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls appetite.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating much more probable."
A Chronic Disease?
Medical guidelines advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Many experts say that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy is often life-long.
This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "emphasize the chronic nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Testimonies
Users who have discontinued the jabs explain a powerful resurgence of cravings.
"I experienced something that goes on and you're instantly starving," said one woman.
This challenge is worsened if individuals have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Growing Interest
Figures indicate that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.
- Use is greater among women compared to males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, experts emphasize that while these medications are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and long-term success relies on integrated behavioural management.
